Lando Norris is a racing driver competing in the 2026 FIA Formula 1 World Championship for McLaren, carrying car number 1 as the reigning world champion. A chaotic opening third of the season has left him fifth in the standings on 128 points — but he arrives at the summer break off the back of a statement win from pole in Budapest.
The Long Game, Rewarded
Norris has raced only in McLaren papaya since his 2019 debut as a 19-year-old — 163 starts, every one of them for Woking. The first five seasons brought poles and podiums but no wins; Miami in 2024 finally broke the seal, four victories followed that year, and in 2025 seven wins and eighteen podiums carried him to the world championship — McLaren's first drivers' title since Lewis Hamilton's 2008 crown, and the culmination of a rebuild Norris fronted through its lean years. He is still only 26, with twelve career wins, 47 podiums and 31 poles already banked across eight seasons at this level; the best chapters of the account should be ahead of him.
The defence has been harder. Three non-scores in the opening six rounds of 2026 undid the good work of podiums at Miami and Barcelona, and McLaren has not had the answer to Mercedes' pace. The Budapest response — pole by twelve thousandths from Hamilton, then a win from the front — was the reminder of what the champion does when the car finally cooperates.

The 2026 Season So Far
The damage was done early: a did-not-start in Shanghai and retirements in Montreal and Monte Carlo meant three zeroes inside the first six rounds, and podiums at Miami and Barcelona only partly repaired it. Since Barcelona the champion has scored in every round, capped by the Budapest pole-win double. The team picture mirrors his: McLaren are third in the constructors' standings on 220 points, 159 behind Mercedes, with a car good enough for podiums on merit but not yet for domination. Norris's 128 points comfortably lead team-mate Oscar Piastri's 92, so the internal hierarchy at least is settled — now the champion needs the machinery to mount a defence worthy of the badge.
