MELBOURNE, March 8 — The 2026 Formula 1 season opened at Albert Park with a Mercedes one-two, as George Russell converted pole-adjacent pace into a commanding lights-to-flag victory, with rookie teammate Kimi Antonelli backing it up in second on his very first Grand Prix weekend as a Mercedes race driver.
How the Race Was Won
Antonelli actually topped qualifying by the narrowest of margins, edging Russell by 0.045 seconds to take a stunning debut pole position. But it was Russell who made the better start on Sunday, using the run to Turn 1 to snatch the lead and control the race from the front for the rest of the afternoon. Antonelli shadowed him for large stretches without finding a way past, banking a superb second place that immediately marked him out as a title-fight contender in only his first season driving for the team.
Charles Leclerc brought Ferrari home third, with new teammate Lewis Hamilton fourth in his first race for the Scuderia — a solid if unspectacular start to a partnership that would be defined much more by what came later in the year. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri rounded out the points-paying top six for McLaren, while Max Verstappen could only manage seventh on a difficult opening weekend for Red Bull.

A Statement Weekend for Mercedes
Beyond the result itself, the story of the weekend was how thoroughly Mercedes controlled proceedings from Friday practice through to the chequered flag. A rookie taking pole and finishing on the podium in his first race, alongside a race win for the team's established lead driver, is about as strong an opening statement as any team could make — and it set the tone for a season in which Mercedes pace at the front would become the defining storyline.
For Ferrari, third and fourth was a respectable if unspectacular start to the Hamilton era at Maranello. For Williams, back-to-back points finishes for Sainz and Albon were an early sign that the team had made a genuine step forward over the winter.

The 2026 season opened under a fresh set of technical regulations, and Albert Park offered the first real evidence of how the pecking order had shuffled as a result. Teams that adapted quickest to the new rules were rewarded immediately, and Mercedes' clean sweep of the front row suggested the team had read the regulation change better than anyone else on the grid heading into round one.
For Antonelli specifically, arriving in the top flight and immediately qualifying on the front row before backing it up with a podium finish was about as strong a first impression as a rookie can make.
